Both Louisville and Indiana are coming off disappointing losses on their home floor and will be looking to bounce back. Indiana’s 87-83 loss to Nebraska raised some serious question about this Hoosiers team and Louisville’s 61-53 loss to Virginia could be explained by its inability to break the tough defense of the Cavaliers.

Scouting report

This game will truly be one of the premier strength-on-strength matchups. Louisville’s defense ranks first in total efficiency, according to KenPom. Indiana’s offense is tenth overall. Louisville’s tough, perimeter defense forces turnovers on 16.8 percent of possessions, which puts the Cardinals in the top 60 among all Division I schools.

With Indiana’s ball-handler Josh Newkirk, the Hoosiers handling of the pressure will be a storyline. Newkirk is averaging a career high in turnovers per game at 2.2 per game. His play will be critical for Indiana’s chances.

Matchup to watch

The difference in this game could be how Indiana handles any number of the defensive pressures Louisville opts to deploy in Bankers Life. The Hoosiers are turning the ball over an outrageous 16 times per game on average, ranking 323rd among all NCAA teams.

There are only 351 total teams.

That is not a good statistic.

Louisville is surely aware of that stat and will likely do its best to exploit it with high-pressure situations defensively early and often. The Cardinals can deploy a full-court pressure, they can make life tough with on-ball pressure, and they can switch defenses in a hurry just as soon as you think you’ve figured it out.

Odds and pick

SportsLine odds: Louisville -2.5

SportsLine projection: Indiana 76, Louisville 71

Pick: Indiana +2.5

Even though the Hoosiers have struggled at Bankers Life, Indiana arguably has more to prove at this point than Louisville. The loss to Fort Wayne was forgivable. The loss to Butler was understandable. But the loss to Nebraska was questionable. Especially on its home floor.

The defense for the Hoosiers has been a liability of late. So results of their success are largely dependent upon how far the offense can carry the team. I think the offense will be good enough to get it done in this one over Louisville.
