South Korean Ryu So-yeon hit a final-hole birdie to take a three-shot lead after the third round at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Former world number one Ryu took another step closer to a third major title, holing six birdies in her five-under 67 at Kemper Lakes near Chicago.

She is 11 under overall, with Canadian Brooke Henderson alone in second place on eight under after a 70.

England’s Bronte Law is six shots backs after posting a three-under-par 69.

South Korean Park Sung-hyun, who shared the halfway lead with Ryu and Henderson, shot 71 to slip four strokes behind.

Ryu, who bogeyed the third hole but bounced back with successive birdies on the fifth and sixth, had a lucky break on the par-five seventh, when her waterbound shot ended up in a spectator’s bag and she escaped with a par.

She holed four birdies on the back nine and, in a span of three holes, went from trailing Henderson by two to leading by two.

“I don’t want my opportunity to slip away,” said Ryu. “I want to finish strong, but it is just better not to expect anything. All I can do is just focus on what I have and just have fun with it.”

Henderson hopes to celebrate Canada Day on Sunday by claiming her second Women’s PGA Championship title after winning the event two years ago when it was held in Seattle.

She opened a two-shot lead with three birdies on the front nine but bogeys on the 14th and 16th holes saw her slip back.

“I feel like all parts of my game are pretty strong this week,” said Henderson. “Hopefully I can just go out and put a good score together and just see what happens.”

Thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday afternoon so the players will tee off earlier than usual – from 13:30 BST – and in groups of three.
